Study in Hungary

Start Your European Education Journey in the Heart of Europe

Hungary is an attractive European study destination offering internationally recognised higher education, English-taught programmes, research opportunities and a diverse international student environment.

Hungarian higher education follows the European higher-education framework and offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, one-tier Master’s and Doctoral programmes. Hungary also uses the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), supporting transparency and recognition of academic achievements across the European Higher Education Area.

At Ambassador Global Studies, we provide personalised guidance throughout your Hungarian study journey—from university and programme selection to admission, scholarships, tuition payment, residence-permit preparation, financial documentation, accommodation and pre-departure support.

Scholarship Opportunity for Bangladeshi Students

Bangladesh is an eligible Sending Partner country for the Stipendium Hungaricum programme. The 2026/27 programme included Bangladesh among participating countries for eligible study programmes.

Hungarian Bachelor’s programmes generally require completion of appropriate secondary education.

Possible study options include:

  • BA programmes

  • BSc programmes

Master’s Programmes

Students normally need an appropriate Bachelor’s qualification for entry to a Master’s programme.

Available qualifications may include:

  • MA

One-Tier Master’s Programmes

Some professions use an integrated degree structure instead of separate Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.

These can include:

  • Medicine

  • Dentistry

  • Law

  • Certain teacher-training programmes

Such programmes can typically last 10–12 semesters depending on the field.

Hungarian universities also offer:

  • Other research-focused doctoral opportunities

Doctoral entry generally requires an appropriate Master’s-level qualification.

4. Academic Eligibility Assessment

  • SSC / equivalent qualifications

  • HSC / equivalent qualifications

  • Programme-specific requirements

Official Study in Hungary guidance notes that requirements vary by institution and programme, and some courses may also require an entrance examination.

Depending on the university and programme, evidence may include:

  • IELTS

  • TOEFL

  • Other internationally recognised English tests

  • Previous education completed in English

  • University-specific language assessment

  • Interview or entrance examination

For the residence-permit process, linguistic ability can be demonstrated through a language certificate, a diploma showing previous foreign-language studies, or other credible evidence.

Minimum requirements vary between universities.

Ambassador Global Studies helps students confirm the exact requirement before application.

6. Hungarian University Application Assistance

We guide students throughout the admission process.

Our assistance may include:

7. Motivation Letter / Study Plan Guidance

A well-prepared motivation letter or study plan should explain the student’s genuine academic objectives.

We help students organise information covering:

  • Academic background

  • Previous qualifications

  • Work experience

  • Why Hungary?

  • Why this university?

  • Why this programme?

  • Relationship with previous studies

  • Academic interests

  • Career objectives

  • Future plans

  • Financial circumstances

All information should accurately reflect the student’s genuine profile and circumstances.

Our assistance can include:

  • Eligibility review

  • University-specific scholarship search

9. Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship

One of Hungary’s major attractions for international students is the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme, established by the Hungarian Government.

For the 2026/27 academic year, the scholarship benefits included:

✅ Tuition-free education
✅ Monthly stipend
✅ Accommodation contribution
✅ Medical insurance
✅ Student ID benefits

Bangladesh Eligibility

Bangladesh is officially included among Stipendium Hungaricum partner countries, with study opportunities determined by the educational cooperation arrangements applicable to Bangladesh.

Students should note that eligible fields and programmes depend on their Sending Partner arrangement and the specific year’s scholarship call.

2026/27 Application Cycle

For the 2026/27 intake, the Stipendium Hungaricum application deadline was 15 January 2026 at 2:00 PM Central European Time. Future applicants should always check the new scholarship call because dates and programme availability change each year.

10. Admission / Acceptance Letter Guidance

After evaluating an application, the university may issue an admission or acceptance certificate.

We help students understand:

  • Admission conditions

  • Academic requirements

  • English requirements

  • Tuition fees

  • Scholarship information

  • Payment conditions

  • Course start date

  • Registration requirements

  • Required supporting documents

  • Residence-permit preparation

For a Hungarian residence permit for study, the student’s study purpose can be demonstrated through a certificate of admission or evidence of student status.

11. Tuition Fee & Payment Guidance

Self-funded students may be required to pay part or all of the required tuition amount according to their university’s instructions.

We provide guidance regarding:

  • Tuition fees

  • Initial payments

  • Payment deadlines

  • University bank details

  • Scholarship adjustments

  • Tuition receipts

  • Refund conditions

  • Documentation for residence-permit purposes

Important Residence Permit Requirement

Hungarian immigration guidance states that an application for a residence permit for study purposes must be accompanied by proof of payment of tuition fees.

Students should therefore carefully follow the payment instructions provided by their university.

12. Residence Permit for the Purpose of Studies

Non-EEA international students studying in Hungary for an extended period generally need a Residence Permit for the Purpose of Studies.

The permit may be granted to an eligible third-country national admitted to qualifying full-time education or training at a recognised Hungarian higher-education institution.

Our guidance may cover:

  • Residence-permit application preparation

  • Admission certificate

  • Passport

  • Tuition-payment evidence

  • Language evidence

  • Financial documentation

  • Accommodation details

  • Health insurance

  • Return-travel evidence

  • Passport photograph

  • Biometrics

  • Additional supporting documents

13. Application from Outside Hungary

Students who are not covered by Hungary’s visa-free entry regime and do not already hold an applicable residence permit normally submit their first residence-permit application outside Hungary.

The application may generally be submitted through the competent Hungarian diplomatic or consular mission in the applicant’s country of nationality or habitual residence.

Ambassador Global Studies helps students organise the required admission and supporting documentation before submission.

14. Type D Entry Visa Guidance

For applicable third-country nationals, students do not normally submit a separate visa application in addition to the residence-permit application. The residence-permit process includes the application for the entry visa needed to collect the approved residence permit.

Once the residence permit is approved, the Hungarian consulate may issue a Type D visa allowing the student to enter Hungary and receive the residence permit.

The current Type D visa used for this purpose is:

  • Single entry

  • Valid for 3 months

  • Authorises a stay of up to 30 days for the purpose of entering Hungary and receiving the residence permit.

The student should enter Hungary within the permitted period.

15. Financial Documentation Guidance

Students must demonstrate that they have sufficient financial resources for their stay in Hungary.

Hungarian immigration authorities may consider evidence showing the applicant can cover:

  • Living expenses

  • Accommodation

  • Healthcare

  • Return or onward travel

  • Other necessary expenses

Acceptable evidence may include:

  • Bank statements

  • Savings

  • Bank balance certificates

  • Scholarship certificates

  • Regular-income evidence

  • Family financial sponsorship

  • Notarised family-support declarations

  • Other credible financial evidence

Where savings are used, the Hungarian immigration authority recommends providing transaction history alongside a balance statement to demonstrate genuine access to the funds.

Important

The official student-residence guidance does not specify one universal fixed minimum bank-balance amount applicable to every student. Instead, applicants must demonstrate sufficient resources according to their circumstances.

16. Accommodation Documentation Guidance

Students need to declare a genuine Hungarian accommodation address as part of the residence-permit application.

The current immigration factsheet states that an existing and real Hungarian address must be declared on the application form.

We help students understand documentation relating to:

  • University dormitories

  • Student residences

  • Private rentals

  • Shared accommodation

  • Accommodation addresses

  • Booking documents

  • Tenancy information where applicable

17. Health Insurance Guidance

Students must demonstrate access to appropriate healthcare coverage in Hungary.

Hungarian immigration authorities require documentary evidence showing that the student either:

  • Has access to comprehensive health-insurance services,

  • Qualifies for applicable Hungarian healthcare arrangements,

  • Is covered under an international agreement, or

  • Can financially cover healthcare costs.

We guide students in understanding the insurance arrangements required by their university and immigration process.

18. Biometrics Guidance

Residence permits contain biometric information.

As part of the application process, applicants may be required to provide:

  • Facial photograph

  • Fingerprints

  • Signature specimen

We help students prepare for the relevant documentation and appointment process.

19. Residence Permit Validity

The current Hungarian immigration rules state that a Residence Permit for the Purpose of Studies is generally issued for:

Minimum:

1 year

or for the duration of the programme if the course is shorter than one year.

Maximum:

Up to 3 years at a time.

It may subsequently be extended for qualifying study periods, subject to applicable requirements.

The permit’s validity cannot extend beyond the validity of the student’s travel document.

20. Residence Permit Extension Guidance

Students continuing their studies may need to apply for an extension before their existing permit expires.

Current rules require study-permit extensions to be submitted from within Hungary through the Enter Hungary platform. Applications must generally be submitted no later than 30 days before expiry.

Students may also need to provide evidence of academic progress.

The immigration authority may refuse an extension or revoke a permit where a student does not complete the degree within one and a half times the official programme duration.

21. Interview & Credibility Preparation

Where required by the university, consulate or immigration process, we help students prepare to explain their genuine study plans.

Preparation may include:

  • Why Hungary?

  • Why this university?

  • Why this programme?

  • Academic history

  • Study gap

  • Programme modules

  • Tuition fees

  • Scholarship information

  • Financial arrangements

  • Sponsor information

  • Accommodation

  • Career objectives

  • Future plans

Students should always provide truthful and consistent information.

22. Working While Studying in Hungary

Hungary offers eligible non-EEA students limited work rights while studying.

Third-country nationals holding a Residence Permit for the Purpose of Studies may currently work:

During the study period:

Maximum 30 hours per week

Outside the study period:

Full-time employment for up to 90 days per year.

Students should always ensure that their employment complies with their residence conditions and does not interfere with their studies.

23. University Career Support

Many Hungarian higher-education institutions operate career offices that can assist students with:

  • Job opportunities

  • Career planning

  • Student employment information

  • Employer connections

  • Career-development programmes

The official Study in Hungary portal notes that most higher-education institutions have career offices supporting students with job opportunities and career planning.

24. Post-Study Job Search / Business Opportunity

Eligible international graduates may have an option to remain in Hungary after successfully completing their studies for the purpose of seeking employment or starting a business.

A third-country national may apply if they:

  • Hold a valid Residence Permit for the Purpose of Studies,

  • Successfully completed their studies, and

  • Intend to seek employment or start a business appropriate to the level of their qualification.

Important Deadline

The application must currently be submitted in Hungary while the study residence permit is still valid, and at least 15 days before the study permit expires.

Students should therefore consider their post-study plans well before graduation.

25. Family Reunification – Important Information

International students should be aware of an important current Hungarian immigration restriction.

Under the current rules, a third-country national holding or applying for a Residence Permit for the Purpose of Studies generally cannot sponsor family members for a residence permit through family reunification.

There is a limited exception concerning a child born in Hungary during the validity of the parent’s study residence permit.

This point is particularly important for married students considering Hungary with dependants.

26. Accommodation Guidance

Students can explore accommodation options including:

  • University dormitories

  • Student residences

  • Shared apartments

  • Private rental

  • Private rooms

  • Temporary accommodation

We encourage students to consider:

  • Distance from university

  • Public transportation

  • Rental costs

  • Utility costs

  • Deposit

  • Contract terms

  • Safety

  • Facilities

  • Residence-permit address requirements

27. Travel & Pre-Departure Support

Our support continues after admission and residence-permit preparation.

Pre-departure guidance may include:

  • Flight planning

  • Accommodation preparation

  • Admission documents

  • Residence-permit approval documents

  • Type D visa where applicable

  • Passport preparation
