Supporting documentation
Immigration New Zealand states that Student visa applicants must generally demonstrate sufficient tuition and living funds, appropriate health and character, genuine reasons for studying, and the ability to leave New Zealand at the end of their stay.
Important: Visa decisions are made solely by Immigration New Zealand (INZ). Ambassador Global Studies cannot guarantee a Student visa outcome.
12. Proof of Funds Guidance
Financial preparation is an important part of the New Zealand Student visa process.
For tertiary-level, English-language or other non-compulsory study, Immigration New Zealand currently requires living funds of:
NZD $20,000 per year
for programmes lasting one year or longer.
For programmes shorter than one year, the published requirement is:
NZD $1,667 per month.
These amounts are for living costs and are separate from applicable tuition fees.
Students also need to demonstrate that they can leave New Zealand at the end of their stay, either through a paid outward ticket or sufficient additional funds to purchase one.
Our financial-document guidance may include:
-
Bank statements
-
Fixed deposits
-
Education loans
-
Scholarship evidence
-
Sponsor documentation
-
Guarantor documentation
-
Source-of-funds evidence
-
Income evidence
-
Tuition-payment receipts
-
Living-cost calculations
-
Outward travel funds
Immigration New Zealand may also request evidence explaining the source of large or recent deposits.
13. Medical & Travel Insurance Guidance
International students applying for the Fee Paying Student Visa must declare that they will have insurance acceptable to their education provider, and the visa requirements include appropriate medical and travel insurance for the stay.
We guide students in understanding:
-
Education-provider insurance requirements
-
Health insurance
-
Travel insurance
-
Coverage period
-
Policy documentation
-
Insurance evidence where required
Students should follow the requirements of their education provider and Immigration New Zealand.
14. Health Examination Guidance
Depending on individual circumstances, Immigration New Zealand may request:
-
Chest X-ray
-
Medical examination
-
Additional health information
The exact requirement depends on factors such as the applicant’s nationality, intended length of stay and health circumstances.
We help students understand the process if Immigration New Zealand requests health documentation.
15. Character & Police Certificate Guidance
Some Student visa applicants may be required to provide police certificates as evidence of good character.
Our guidance may cover:
-
Understanding whether a police certificate is required
-
Document preparation
-
Translation requirements
-
Submission requirements
Immigration New Zealand lists police certificates among the supporting documents that may be required for a Fee Paying Student Visa.
16. Genuine Student & Interview Preparation
If further assessment is required by an education provider or during the visa process, we help students prepare to clearly explain their genuine study plans.
Preparation may cover:
-
Why New Zealand?
-
Why this institution?
-
Why this programme?
-
Previous academic background
-
Course modules
-
Study gap

-
Tuition fees
-
Financial arrangements
-
Sponsor information
-
Accommodation plans
-
Future goals
Students should always answer truthfully and consistently.
17. Working While Studying in New Zealand
A significant change to Student visa work rights took effect on 3 November 2025.
Eligible students can now be permitted to work:
Up to 25 hours per week while studying
and, depending on their visa conditions:
Full-time during eligible scheduled holidays.
Previously the general limit was 20 hours per week.
Work rights are not automatic for every student or programme, so students must check the conditions stated on their individual Student visa.
18. Practical Work & Internship Opportunities
Some New Zealand programmes include practical work experience, industry placements or other forms of work-based learning.
Where practical work experience is a compulsory part of the programme, the education provider may need to confirm this through an offer letter, programme outline or other documentation.
Immigration New Zealand states that required practical work experience can be additional to the normal Student visa work-hour allowance when it forms part of the approved programme.
Programme structure varies by provider.
19. Post-Study Work Opportunities
Eligible graduates may be able to apply for a Post Study Work Visa after completing an approved qualification in New Zealand.
Depending on the qualification and study completed, the visa can allow an eligible graduate to remain and work in New Zealand for:
Up to 3 years.
Current eligibility depends on factors including:
-
Qualification level
-
Type of qualification
-
Duration of study in New Zealand
-
Whether the qualification is on an eligible list where applicable
-
Timing of the application
-
Other immigration requirements
For a degree-level 7 or higher qualification, current rules generally require at least 30 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand for Post Study Work Visa eligibility.
Upcoming Change – 16 November 2026
Immigration New Zealand has announced that from 16 November 2026, Post Study Work Visa eligibility will also be extended to applicants who have completed:
-
an NZQCF Level 7 Graduate Diploma studied full-time in New Zealand, and
-
a Bachelor’s degree completed either in New Zealand or overseas.
Because this change takes effect in the future, students should check the rules applicable on the date they apply.
Post-study work eligibility should always be checked before choosing a programme.
20. Family & Dependant Guidance
Depending on the student’s programme, qualification level and individual circumstances, some students may be able to support visa applications for eligible family members.
Immigration New Zealand notes that Student visa holders can support visitor visas for family members in some circumstances and may also be able to support work or Student visa applications for eligible partners or children, depending on applicable immigration requirements.
Eligibility should be checked individually before making plans.
21. Accommodation Guidance
Finding appropriate accommodation is an important part of preparing to study in New Zealand.
Students may consider:
