Why Study in Malaysia?

Quality-Assured Higher Education

Malaysia has an established national quality-assurance framework for higher education.

The Malaysian Qualifications Register (MQR) maintained by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency provides information about accredited programmes and qualifications offered by Malaysian higher-education institutions.

Students should therefore check the accreditation status of their selected programme before making a final enrolment decision.

Multicultural Study Environment

Malaysia offers international students the opportunity to live and study in a diverse Southeast Asian environment with students from many different countries.

Students can explore programmes in areas such as:

Choosing the right institution is one of the most important parts of studying abroad.

We help students compare institutions based on:

  • Programme availability

  • Tuition fees

  • Scholarships

  • Location

  • Intake availability

  • Programme duration

  • English-language requirements

  • Career relevance

  • Campus facilities

  • Accommodation

  • Student support

  • Budget

We also encourage students to check whether their selected qualification is appropriately accredited.

The Malaysian Qualifications Register acts as a reference point for accredited qualifications awarded by Malaysian higher-education providers.

Ambassador Global Studies helps students identify programmes suited to their previous education and future career objectives.

  • Programme-specific requirements

For international entry qualifications, Malaysia’s MQA provides an equivalency framework to help higher-education institutions determine the appropriate level of study for applicants holding international qualifications.

5. English Language Requirement Guidance

English proficiency is an important part of many Malaysian university applications.

EMGS states that most university courses in Malaysia are conducted in English and that applicants applying for a Visa Approval Letter (VAL) must demonstrate an acceptable level of English proficiency.

English tests currently accepted by EMGS for Student Pass applications include:

  • IELTS / IELTS Online

  • TOEFL iBT

  • TOEFL Essentials

  • PTE Academic / PTE Academic Online

  • MUET

  • Cambridge English qualifications

  • Cambridge Linguaskill

  • Occupational English Test — OET

  • ELS Certified Intensive English Programme — CIEP

The actual minimum score depends on the institution and programme.

We help students check both the university admission requirement and the Student Pass documentation requirement.

6. Malaysian University Application Assistance

We support students throughout the application process.

Our assistance may include:

  • Application form preparation

  • Passport review

  • Academic certificate checking

  • Transcript checking

  • English-language document checking

  • CV guidance

  • SOP / Personal Statement guidance

  • Work-experience documentation

  • Recommendation letter guidance

  • Portfolio guidance where required

  • Application submission

  • Application follow-up

  • Offer letter guidance

These services are consistent with Ambassador Global Studies’ existing admission and application-assistance services.

7. SOP / Personal Statement Guidance

Where required by the institution, we help students prepare an organised study statement explaining:

  • Academic background

  • Professional experience

  • Why Malaysia?

  • Why the selected university?

  • Why the selected course?

  • Connection with previous studies

  • Career objectives

  • Future plans

  • Financial circumstances

Students should always provide genuine and accurate information relating to their actual educational and professional circumstances.

8. Scholarship Assistance

Many Malaysian institutions offer scholarships, bursaries and tuition discounts to eligible international students.

We help students explore:

  • Academic merit scholarships

  • International student scholarships

  • Tuition discounts

  • University-specific awards

  • Faculty scholarships

  • Early-payment incentives where available

Our assistance can include:

  • Scholarship search

  • Eligibility assessment

  • Application guidance

  • Scholarship document checking

  • Comparing estimated tuition after scholarship

Scholarship availability and amounts depend on the institution, programme, intake and student profile.

9. Offer Letter Assistance

Students normally need to obtain an offer from their selected Malaysian institution before proceeding with their Student Pass application.

EMGS requires a copy of the Offer Letter / Letter of Acceptance when a new Student Pass application is submitted.

We help students understand:

  • Admission conditions

  • Academic conditions

  • English conditions

  • Tuition fees

  • Scholarships

  • Deposit requirements

  • Acceptance deadlines

  • Programme start date

  • Required documents

  • Next steps after the offer

10. Tuition Fee & Offer Acceptance Guidance

After receiving an offer, students may need to make an initial payment or deposit according to the institution’s requirements.

We provide guidance regarding:

  • Offer acceptance

  • Tuition-payment instructions

  • Initial deposits

  • Scholarship adjustments

  • Payment receipts

  • University deadlines

  • Student Pass-related fees

  • Other institutional charges

Tuition and deposit requirements vary by institution.

11. Malaysia Student Pass & EMGS Guidance

International students studying full-time in Malaysia generally require a valid Student Pass.

Education Malaysia Global Services — EMGS — operates the official online gateway used for international Student visa / Student Pass processing for Malaysian higher education.

Our guidance may cover:

  • Student Pass application preparation

  • EMGS documentation

  • Offer Letter

  • Passport documentation

  • Academic certificates

  • Academic transcripts

  • English-language certificate

  • Health Declaration Form

  • Student photograph

  • Personal Bond requirements

  • Medical screening

  • Insurance

  • Visa Approval Letter

  • Entry-visa requirements

  • Student Pass endorsement

EMGS lists the required documents and specifications for new Student Pass applications.

Important: Final Student Pass and immigration decisions are made by the relevant Malaysian authorities. Ambassador Global Studies cannot guarantee an immigration outcome.

12. Visa Approval Letter – VAL Guidance

The Visa Approval Letter (VAL) is an important stage of the Malaysian Student Pass process.

Before applying, students generally need documentation including:

  • Offer Letter

  • Passport

  • Academic documents

  • English-language evidence

  • Health Declaration

  • Passport photograph

  • Additional documents where applicable

EMGS currently requires passports for new Student Pass applications to have at least 18 months’ validity, and recommends longer validity for longer courses.

We help students prepare their documents carefully to reduce avoidable delays.

13. Single Entry Visa – SEV Guidance

Some nationalities must obtain a Single Entry Visa (SEV) before travelling to Malaysia after receiving the appropriate immigration approval.

Important for Bangladeshi Students

Bangladesh is currently listed by EMGS as a country whose students require a Single Entry Visa before entering Malaysia.

We help students understand:

  • VAL status

  • SEV requirement

  • Required passport documentation

  • Travel-document preparation

  • When they may travel to Malaysia

  • Documents to carry when entering Malaysia

14. Medical Screening Guidance

New international students are required to complete a medical screening after arriving in Malaysia.

EMGS currently requires new students to undergo medical screening at an approved panel clinic in Malaysia within 7 working days of arrival.

The Student Pass endorsement process cannot proceed normally if the required in-country medical screening is not completed.

We guide students regarding:

  • Medical-screening procedures

  • EMGS panel clinics

  • Required documents

  • Appointment preparation

  • Medical-screening timelines

  • Follow-up requirements

15. Medical Insurance Guidance

Medical insurance is compulsory for international students entering Malaysia.

EMGS states that international students must be covered by a locally purchased medical health insurance scheme meeting the applicable Ministry of Higher Education requirements.

We help students understand:

  • Insurance requirements

  • Insurance period

  • Institution-arranged insurance

  • Medical coverage

  • Required insurance documentation

16. Financial Documentation Guidance

Students and their families should have a realistic financial plan before beginning their Malaysian education journey.

Our guidance can include preparation relating to:

  • Tuition fees

  • Initial deposits

  • Living expenses

  • Accommodation

  • Student Pass / EMGS costs

  • Insurance

  • Medical screening

  • Travel expenses

  • Sponsor documentation

  • Bank documentation

  • Source of funds

  • Emergency funds

Exact financial-document requirements may differ according to the institution and the student’s circumstances.

17. Personal Bond Guidance

Malaysia’s Student Pass process includes a Personal Bond requirement.

EMGS explains that Malaysian educational institutions sign a Personal Bond on behalf of international students, and the institution may require the student to lodge the specified amount. The amount is normally refundable after completion or withdrawal provided immigration rules have not been violated.

We help students understand:

  • Why the Personal Bond is required

  • Institution procedures

  • Required amount

  • Documentation

  • Refund conditions

The bond amount can vary according to nationality.

18. Student Visa / Credibility Preparation

Where an institution or authority requests additional information, we help students prepare to explain their genuine academic plans.

Preparation may include:

  • Why Malaysia?

  • Why this university?

  • Why this course?

  • Academic background

  • Study gap

  • Course modules

  • Tuition fees

  • Financial arrangements

  • Sponsor details

  • Accommodation plans

  • Career objectives

  • Future plans

Students should always provide truthful and consistent information.

19. Working While Studying in Malaysia

International students should understand that Malaysia’s Student Pass work conditions are considerably more restricted than those of some other popular study destinations.

Eligible international students at public or private higher-education institutions may work:

Up to 20 hours per week

but generally only during semester breaks or holidays lasting more than 7 days and only in permitted sectors such as:

  • Restaurants

  • Petrol kiosks

  • Mini markets

  • Hotels

Prior approval from the Malaysian Immigration Department is required, and applications are generally handled through the student’s institution.

Students should not advertise Malaysia as offering unrestricted part-time work during normal teaching weeks.

20. Student Pass Renewal Guidance

International students must maintain satisfactory academic progress and attendance to support Student Pass renewal.

EMGS currently states that students should achieve:

Minimum CGPA: 2.0

and

Minimum overall attendance: 80%

for Student Pass renewal. Where these requirements are not met, the institution may need to provide an explanation letter.

We encourage students to maintain strong academic performance and attendance throughout their studies.

21. Post-Study Graduate Pass Guidance

Malaysia currently operates a Graduate Pass for certain eligible international graduates.

The Graduate Pass can allow eligible students who have completed a Bachelor’s degree or higher to remain in Malaysia for an additional 12 months after graduation and work part-time in permitted sectors without employer sponsorship.

Eligibility requirements include conditions relating to:

  • Nationality

  • Qualification

  • Passport validity

  • Valid Student Pass

  • Graduation evidence

  • Medical insurance

  • Malaysian sponsor

  • Immigration history

Important for Bangladeshi Students

As of August 2026, Bangladesh is not included on EMGS’s published list of nationalities eligible for the Graduate Pass.

Therefore, this benefit should not currently be promoted to Bangladeshi students as a guaranteed Malaysian post-study option.

Students from eligible nationalities should still check the latest rules when they graduate because immigration policies can change.

22. Accommodation Guidance

Finding suitable accommodation is an important part of preparing to study in Malaysia.

Students may consider:

  • University accommodation

  • Campus residence

  • Private student accommodation

  • Shared apartments

  • Private rental

  • Homestay

  • Temporary accommodation

We encourage students to consider:

  • Distance from campus

  • Transportation

  • Rent

  • Utility costs

  • Security

  • Facilities

  • Deposits

  • Contract terms

Our team can help students understand the accommodation options associated with their chosen university and location.

23. Travel & Pre-Departure Support

Our support continues after admission and Student Pass preparation.

Pre-departure guidance can include:

  • Flight planning

  • Accommodation preparation

  • Passport and travel documents

  • VAL

  • SEV where required

  • Offer Letter

  • Tuition-payment receipts

  • Insurance

  • Airport-arrival preparation

  • Immigration requirements

  • Baggage preparation

  • Local transportation

  • University registration
